Zimbabwe
Capital of: Harare
Harare is Zimbabwe’s capital and largest city, serving as the political and economic hub on the northeastern Highveld. Founded as Fort Salisbury in 1890 under British colonial rule, it was renamed Harare in 1982—two years after independence—to honor the Shona chief Neharawa. By contrast, Bulawayo is the second-largest city in the southwest, Victoria Falls is a tourist town by the famous waterfall, and Gweru is a central provincial city.
Memory tip: Think “Ha! Rare”—Zimbabwe’s capital is the “rare” gem Harare.
