Tunisia

Capital of: Tunis

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia, serving as the country’s political and economic hub on Lake Tunis near the Mediterranean. The country’s very name comes from its capital—Tunisia essentially means “land of Tunis”—a handy clue for remembering the answer. The city’s historic medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, highlights its long-standing cultural importance. Don’t confuse it with nearby Carthage: once a powerful Phoenician and Roman city, its ruins now form a suburb of modern Tunis. Sfax and Bizerte are important port cities but not the capital. Memory tip: Tunisia = Tunis + “-ia.”
