Saint Kitts and Nevis

Capital of: Basseterre

Basseterre is the capital of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, located on the southwest coast of Saint Kitts. While Charlestown is the main town on Nevis, it isn’t the national capital; Port Zante is a cruise-ship harbor area within Basseterre; and Dieppe Bay is a small town in the north of Saint Kitts. Founded by the French in 1627, Basseterre’s name comes from “Basse-Terre,” meaning “low-lying land,” reflecting its coastal setting. It’s the country’s political and commercial hub. Memory tip: think “Basseterre = base of the federation,” while “Charlestown” stays on Nevis.
