Niger

Capital of: Niamey

Niamey is the capital and largest city of Niger, situated on the Niger River in West Africa. It became the administrative center during French colonial rule in the early 20th century and remains the country’s political, economic, and cultural hub, home to institutions like the National Museum and the Grand Mosque. Its riverside location has long made it a key point for trade and transport in the Sahel. Memory tip: Think “Ni-ger, Ni-amey, Ni-ger River”—all start with “Ni.” Don’t mix it up with Nairobi, which is Kenya’s capital, or Nijmegen, a city in the Netherlands. “Niara” resembles “naira,” the currency of Nigeria—another easy trap since Niger and Nigeria are neighboring countries with similar names.
