Nicaragua

Capital of: Managua

Managua is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua. Chosen in 1852 as a neutral compromise between rival colonial centers León and Granada, its central position on the south shore of Lake Managua (Xolotlán) made it practical for governance. Today it hosts the national government and remains the country’s main economic hub, rebuilt after devastating earthquakes, notably in 1972. Memory tip: Managua and Nicaragua both end with “-agua” (“water” in Spanish), and the capital sits right beside a big lake—Managua by the agua. The other options—Granada (colonial gem), León (historic university city), and Masaya (cultural hub with an active volcano)—are important, but none is the seat of government.
