Montenegro
Capital of: Podgorica
Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, serving as the country’s political and economic hub. Its status was reaffirmed when Montenegro regained independence in 2006. During the Yugoslav era (1946–1992) the city was called Titograd; the historic royal capital is nearby Cetinje, today home to many cultural institutions.
The name Podgorica literally means “under the little hill” (pod = under; Gorica = small hill), a handy cue to link mountainous Montenegro with its capital at the hill’s foot. Don’t confuse it with neighbors’ capitals: Belgrade is Serbia’s, Sarajevo is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s, and Tirana is Albania’s.
