Lesotho
Capital of: Maseru
Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho, located on the Caledon (Mohokare) River right on the border with South Africa. It became the administrative center under British rule and remained the capital when Lesotho gained independence in 1966, serving as the country’s political and economic hub.
Avoid the distractors: Maputo (spelled here as “Maputso”) is Mozambique’s capital, while Leribe (Hlotse) and Thaba-Tseka are important towns within Lesotho but not the capital. Memory tip: Lesotho is known as the “Kingdom in the Sky” for its high-altitude terrain—think Maseru in the Maloti Mountains. Also, both Lesotho and Maseru end with a “-u” sound, an easy pairing to remember.
