Israel

Capital of: Jerusalem

Jerusalem is Israel’s capital and seat of government: the Knesset (parliament), Supreme Court, president’s residence, and prime minister’s offices are all located there. Tel Aviv, though often mentioned, is the country’s economic and tech hub, not its capital. Jerusalem is among the world’s oldest cities and is sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Because of its sensitive status, many countries historically kept embassies in Tel Aviv, though a few have moved to Jerusalem in recent years. Memory tip: J for Jerusalem—home to Israel’s Judicial (Supreme Court) and legislative (Knesset) branches.
