Iceland

Capital of: Reykjavik

Reykjavík is Iceland’s capital and largest city, the nation’s political, economic, and cultural hub. Set on the southwestern coast, it hosts the Althingi (one of the world’s oldest parliaments) and is famed for its geothermal energy. Its name means “Smoky Bay,” inspired by steam from hot springs observed by early settlers. The other options are important towns but not the capital: Akureyri is the “Capital of the North,” Húsavík is renowned for whale watching, and Egilsstaðir serves the east. Memory tip: think of Iceland’s steamy landscape—“smoky” leads to Reykjavík. Or R for Reykjavík = the seat of Rule. When unsure, choose the biggest, busiest city—the one with parliament and the landmark Hallgrímskirkja.
