Guyana

Capital of: Georgetown

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana, located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Demerara River. Once the Dutch town of Stabroek, it was renamed in 1812 for Britain’s King George III when the territory became British Guiana. Today, it’s the country’s political and economic hub, known for its colonial architecture, the wooden St. George’s Cathedral, and seawalls guarding its low-lying coast. Memory tip: G for Guyana, G for Georgetown—plus “Demerara sugar from Georgetown.” Don’t mix it up with nearby capitals: Paramaribo is Suriname, Port of Spain is Trinidad and Tobago, and Bridgetown is Barbados.
