Burundi
Capital of: Gitega
Gitega is the capital of Burundi. In 2019, the government officially moved the political capital from Bujumbura to Gitega, citing its central location and historical significance—Gitega was once the royal capital of the Kingdom of Burundi. Bujumbura remains the country’s largest city and economic hub on Lake Tanganyika, but the seat of government is now in Gitega.
To remember: G is for Government in Gitega; B is for Business in Bujumbura. Ngozi and Mwaro are important provincial towns but not the national capital. Gitega’s central highland location helps connect regions, reflecting a move to balance the country’s administration geographically.
