Bosnia and Herzegovina

Capital of: Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the capital and political center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, home to the country’s main government institutions and a cultural crossroads. The other options are important cities but not the national capital: Banja Luka is the administrative center of the Republika Srpska entity, Mostar is famed for its Stari Most bridge, and Tuzla is an industrial hub known for salt. Historically, Sarajevo reflects Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences, was the site of the 1914 assassination that sparked World War I, hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, and endured a long siege in the 1990s. Memory tip: “Sara leads Bosnia”—Sarajevo leads the nation, while the others lead regions or industries.
