Bangladesh
Capital of: Dhaka
Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, serving as the nation’s political, economic, and cultural hub. Set on the Buriganga River in the Bengal delta, it was a Mughal provincial capital known as Jahangirnagar, later the capital of East Pakistan, and since 1971 the capital of independent Bangladesh.
Think “D for Delta, D for Dhaka”—the densely populated delta city. Dhaka is famous for its bustling rickshaws, universities, and garment industry, and landmarks like the National Parliament (by Louis Kahn) and the Shaheed Minar, tied to the Bengali Language Movement. By contrast, Chittagong is the main seaport, Sylhet is a tea-growing region, and Khulna is an industrial city—none are the national capital.
